Each class, before group projects are assigned, the day's reading is presented by the gardener who signed up for it. This day's reading coincided with one of the tasks: irrigating the herb spiral.

Ella Denham-Conroy's reading shared the sustainable design behind an herb spiral. Essentially, the spiral is slightly sloped and allows for excess water to flow down into a hole and be used for other purposes.

On the same day, the class learned another sustainable watering technique: drip irrigation, a method that drips drops of water throughout the day. Tubes with small spouts were assembled and installed in the herb spiral, eliminating the task of watering it every day.
